A Prime Year is 31

An impromptu gathering was organised by Mei on Friday evening to celebrate my 31st birthday. It is not usual for me to celebrate birthdays that are prime numbers so it was a small yet rowdy crowd who turned up for drinks at Sydney's awesomest cocktail bar, the Hilton's Zeta Bar.

The bar food is really good and the service is great!

We were tired at this point :)

Thanks guys. Thanks Mei. It was a fun night!

PS David K was here but left before the drunken camera came out.

Failing an interview on the way up

A company I worked at once was hiring for a technical position (not dev work) and it put out the call to the pimps (from Wikipedia: "Typically, a pimp will solicit clients for, protect, and in other ways manage a [fill in profession] in exchange for a commission on her earnings") to get a handful of fully screened applicants.

During the week of the interviews, geeky looking people that I didn't recognise (stranger danger) were being shown through our offices and in one case one hopped on to the lift with me. Story starts with me turning up at the lift to our building pre-coffee-comatose one morning. As I waited for the elevator to land on the ground at it's usual slothful pace, two other people turned up and waited for the same thing.

When the doors opened, I boarded and hit the button for my floor. The second guy paused, holding up the queue of 1 behind him and then stepped on to the lift. I admit it wasn't the friendliest or most fragrant lift but he was even slow for me without my caffeine hit. Then half way in the door so the other guy could just fit passed, he spun and looked at the buttons... eons passed... and he finally pushed a button. He pushed the button for my floor that had already been pushed. He saw me push hit. He saw it was the only red button. He pushed it anyway.

As he stepped off the lift in front of me as we got to our floor, I just knew that this guy was not someone I could ever enjoy working with, technically anyway.

Not so fabulous, is our Scrabulous

My fave facebook app is not doing so well. It's been down for two days. I've had to go cold turkey. Giles quoted someone on the 'blag who said that when you write a popular facebook application, you are happy because it is popular and then you are sad because your server melts.

Walkies

Stealing an idea from David, I visually documented my late afternoon walk home from work in Milson's Point. It's a beautiful walk, despite the traffic. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't do great night shots but you get the idea.

Day 12 - Caffè Latte Patches

Someone needs to invent the caffè latte patch for the recovering caffeholic.

This morning involved a lot of rushing around. When I finally settled down, I felt the need for a coffee but not for the taste of coffee or the hit it gives but for that warm mug of X to hold in my hands as I read the paper (online of course) or watch bad pop music.

The similar need a smoker has to hold a cancer stick between their fingers was replaced by a cuppa hot chocolate. It was nice. Not as heavy though. Not as warm. Not the same.

Headaches 0; Tantrums 0; Deaths 0.

Day 10 - Feels Like it's in Binary

The tiredness is the worst part. My sleeping patterns seem normal but I have not really been awake for 4 days. Each day I feel more and more sleepy. To combat it I've tried exercise, drinking lots of water, cold water splashed on my face, talking louder than usual and shaking my head like a wet dog. Not scientific... but something has to be tried.

Other side effects include hightened intolerance for stupidity, the sudden need for 3PM naps and walking slowly by the coffee shops to smell that which must not be named.

Thanks to Sanson for the only good advice I've recieved. Others have offered alternative addictions but I will pass on those for now.

PS I've also had to edit this post 4 times.

Is all code created equal?

Almost every other day, I go home with a WTF story after dealing with our legacy code. Now, I'm a realist (I like to think) and accept that if I reviewed code I wrote 12 months ago, I would be unimpressed. The thing is that the feelings stoked by the current code and design include outrage, disbelief and once in a while hysterical laughter.

Today I'm stopping to ask myself if I've just become a code snob and the code isn't really that bad.

Should I just accept it and pretend it's easy to work around? Do I actually want to rewrite every line of code in the world? Is it fair to expect developers to pick the bandaids of the old code and fix it? Is all code created equal?

Day 9 - No Damana! No!

You might be wondering where day 0 - 8 went, well ask anyone who goes cold turkey and they'll tell you that those days zoom by before consciousness hits!

I have not had a cup of coffee for 9 days.

For the first few days, there were headaches and grumpiness. Then came the odd feeling of my brain waking up on its own in the morning... that was about day 5. Now, after three nights of sleeplessness (not sure what induced this) I am sitting at my wage slave desk and wondering how the hell people stay awake without coffee.

If you have any tips, please let me know. Do not suggest I drink coffee.

Frogs ?

Giles and I recently cleaned up a slow Mac for a friend. We found a directory on the desktop called "frogs ?" and it got us interested. Were their pics of frogs or was a frogger game in there?

When we opened it we realised that the main user of the computer had no idea what these blue frogs were that someone else had downloaded on to their computer so they were grouped in a folder and the obvious question was asked... frogs ?

Damana Simpson

This is me as a Simpsons character...

Making me work for it

There is a person who often sends me emails containing the question "How are you?" or the statement "Hope you are well". For variety, there will be a "Hi Damana" preceding that question or even a "Hey Damana". That's it. Ok, maybe a trailing line saying "I'm fine." or "Works sux" or a "me me me" comment. These emails are always sent at the beginning of the person's work day. This is a rule and does not much vary.

Now, it is nice to get emails from people. It shows they are thinking about you. It shows they care and that they are thinking about you. That's nice.

I usually react in two ways to these emails:

1. A full explanation of my life since the last email containing witty remarks and probing questions in to the state of different events that the person mentioned to me previously. My belief is that you make an effort when communicating to keep those channels open. People matter so show them they do;

2. A quick response saying thanks for the email and a summary of how life is and a promise to write a longer email soon. I then follow up a few hours later with that longer email (See 1).

No matter which tack I take, there is usually a short retort from the person containing more details of their day or week and no reference to anything I've said accept to answer questions about themself. That's fine, sometimes people don't write long emails. I accept that.

Now, the point of this story is that last week was one of the shittiest weeks of my life. Life has ups and downs but last week had a helluva lots of downs. A NIN downward spiral type feeling. Early in the week, I recieved one of those "How are you?" emails with a few important bits of data from the person's life. I responded telling them that my beloved kitty had died. The response was a short one about how the person is still sad about a pet they had. It was kind and expressed sympathy. I was so upset that day that I did not respond to anyones emails.

During the rest of the week, I got emails saying "Hope you are well" and "How are you?". There were messages on Facebook saying the same thing. Nothing else, just that. Just the usual. Then came an email that started with the usual and was then followed by "me me me" comments.

All of these emails, I have ignored. During such an awful week, I just could not make the huge effort it took to talk to this person. The major work it takes to ask all the questions and drive the entire conversation. I also didn't want to talk about them or their life or their plans or whatever. Some days, I want to talk about me and how I feel. I usually don't. I try to be positive and interested in these people who only care about talking about themselves. Some days, it's just too hard.

A long time ago, I read the book How to Win Friends and Influence People and a key point they made is that you should talk to people about something they are interested in and a sure fire winning topic is them :o) Thing is, you do it often enough and you actually realise that talking about yourself is a boring topic. Get a damn blog if you want to do that. Don't converse about it.

Bourbon Blind Taste Test

On Friday at my workplace, there was a very classy competition to determine the best bourbon and cola pre-mixed drink available. Our chief scientist Martin purchased (for the company) 6 different types of bourbon + cola and designed a blind taste test.

7 participants drank and ranked and also guessed the brands. It was all kind of random and I believe the outcome was that people came out liking the bourbon they thought they liked and also came out drunk. I participated as an impartial judge since the smell of bourbon reminds me of a Darwin nightclubs as they are closing for the night - yuck! I drank about 12 sips (2 of each).

Cups were labeled with letter A- F

Martin was quite enthusiastic

London - Lundy - Lundy Pundy - Pundy - Pundy Wundy - Pundle - The Pund - Bearsy - The Pundilator - Pundificous

London 'Pundy' Madden 13th November 2002 - 28th July 2007
Rest in Peace dear little Bearsy

Our beautiful, brilliant, kind and gentle London passed away on the weekend. Giles, Paris and I are devastated. She was not yet 5 years old, with her next birthday in November.

The vet told us that she died from a genetic condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It was sudden and she did not suffer due to how fast it happened. There was nothing medically that could be done for her.

London and Paris (A Tail of Two Kitties) are not just our pets or simply cats. To Giles and I, they are our babies. If you knew London and how much we loved her, then you will understand the pain we are in now.

Losing Pundy is the worst experience I have ever had. My heart is broken beyond repair.

London deserves more than just this but I had to write something now. There are many photos and stories which I will add later, when the world stops spinning.

If you get a chance, stop and think about her for a minute or two. This is from her Daddy.

Voodoo Knife Block

This is my kewlest knife block...

NMKY

My favourite Finnish song of all time ...

More than meets the eye

Joe (a guy at work) and I are the biggest Transformers fans in the whole wide bCode, if not the world. He bought Optimus Prime from ebay and brought him to work so that I'd stop asking him to bring the toy to work. It took me a while but I got him transformed, except for his head popping up.

It was kinda sad that all the guys around me kept telling me to give it to them and asking why it was taking me so long. That whole testosterone stupidity always confuses me, no matter how long I work with blokes. They also don't even truly care about OP and probably wouldn't prefer him as Prime Minister as Joe and I would.

Either way, with the mean remarks or not, I had lots of fun so thanks Joe!!!

Partially transformed so you can see his legs on a truck

Fully transformed with Joe's help

Harry Potter

The seventh and final book was a fabulous ending to the saga. As someone who has read every book as they came out, this time was no different. I stayed up all night, missed a friends birthday pub party and read the entire book. It was worth it.

What makes me a little sad is that so many people online are attacking people who put down the mouse, turned off the TV and read the book. It's a nice story. I read a lot of other books, newspapers, magazines and blogs, love watching TV and movies and have wasted a lot of my time online and out in the real world with real people.

Just be happy and nice.

The guy with the catcam has returned after getting away from the censoring of those idiots at WordPress.

Check out where his cat Mr Lee has been. It's worth it just to finally find out where THEY go.

The "Internet" is just a passing phase

Today I was advised by a software developer who mainly works commercially in C and C++ on Linux, that I should broaden my skillbase and consider moving away from web work since there is nothing interesting there. It would make me more employable too - which I didn't realise was an issue.

At first I was unsure of whether I should be offended or laugh openly. Now, I think neither. Let's sit back and let the future decide.

Are there any other developers out there who think this web thing is pretty much over?

And here I was thinking that only heroin is so passe.

Noodles and Vines

When I think noodles, I don't usually think of vines but Silk Road in Chinatown seems to think the decorations work. If you can ignore the fact that you are sitting beneath a grape ceiling and that the tables "can not be moved even an inch or the other tables won't fit", then you will enjoy the kebabs and noodles.

Mei, Rock, Giles and I spent less than $50 for the four of us and enjoyed two giant bowls of noodles in soup, braised lamb stretched noodles and lamb kebabs + corkage. It was well worth it and in the end, the grapes grew on me.

The Little Train That Couldn't

Apparently CityRail doesn't always remember to put the pins back in the roof hatches when they should and that leaves poor folk like me (there are thousands of us) to walk home across the coathanger. There has to be a planning problem if one train breaking down can cause so much disruption.

It did make me realise that it is not a long walk from work to home and that I should do it more often. At the moment, a friend and I are going to walk every Tuesday and maybe more when the weather warms up.

Sydney GPO

We went for a walk through the city as usual and scoped out the Sydney GPO. It's a cool building full of a lot of nice restaurants and shops. I will have to get a group of carnivores signed up for a dinner at Prime.
