This is just one window on display at David Jones on Market Street. They are all scenes from the Nutcracker Suite. People stop and watch and some of the children were as excited as I was :)
The marionettes in the windows at David Jones in Sydney city
You have to laugh, really. Inside the window is a typical northern hemisphere (and north of the 50th parallel at that) winter scene. Meanwhile, reflected in the window is a typical Sydney late spring day, with gorgeous blue skies and temps up in the high twenties.
It makes you wonder whether Australia will ever stop importing American/European cultural themes, especially when they are so tied up with the seasons, and come up with something a little more appropriate to the region. Bah, humbug, I say!
